When I arrived here in 1998, we weren’t considered a big city yet. The downtown high-rises weren’t that high. The streets weren’t very crowded at night (with good reason…there wasn’t much for people to do).

Now, though, Hillsborough County is undergoing perhaps the most exciting metamorphosis in its history. A new downtown is blooming around the Riverwalk, and commercial, dining and entertainment activity is growing all over the county. Young entrepreneurs are now staying here, instead of seeking greener pastures elsewhere. And they’re doing everything from starting tech companies to brewing craft beer.

All of which means that now is a critical time for all of us who call Hillsborough County home.  We stand at the threshold of greatness. But without the know-how, the can-do spirit, the inter-agency cooperation, the vision – and the visionaries – none of this is guaranteed.

As we grow, we’re facing major questions – and choices – on key issues such as traffic, tourism and economic development. We need people who know how to navigate tricky waters. Who know how to build consensus. And who’ve demonstrated these talents in leadership positions.

I know how to get things done, and I have the record to prove it. And I care very much about this community.
