Small Minds Vs. Great Minds…
The Choice Is Yours
By Matt DiMaio
You don’t need a high IQ to think like a great mind. You can start by paying attention to how you respond to the people around you.
Someone makes a mistake. Someone faces a problem. Someone achieves the success you want. What you choose to notice in those moments can give you something to criticize… or something that helps you grow.
Consider these four everyday choices.

SMALL MINDS laugh at other people’s mistakes.
GREAT MINDS learn from them.
What do you do when someone makes a mistake? For some, it’s an occasion to mock them. For others, it’s an opportunity to learn from it and avoid making the same mistake themselves.
Decide what type of person you want to be. Instead of laughing, you might ask yourself, “What can that teach me?”

SMALL MINDS discuss other people’s problems to feel better about themselves.
GREAT MINDS look for lessons that help them become better.
Talking about someone else’s troubles might make your own life seem better for a moment. But understanding how they got into that situation could help you make wiser choices in yours. Let their experience give you something to learn, rather than something to feel superior about.

SMALL MINDS connect with others through gossip.
GREAT MINDS build connections through honesty.
Sharing someone else’s secrets may get people’s attention, but sharing your own struggles gives them a chance to know you. Admitting a mistake or saying, “I’ve had trouble with that, too,” can open the door to a more meaningful conversation. Real trust grows when people know they can be honest with you without becoming your next topic of gossip.

SMALL MINDS envy people who have achieved success.
GREAT MINDS study them.
When someone achieves the success you want, you can resent their progress or get curious about how they made it. Pay attention to their habits, their preparation, and the choices that helped them move ahead. Their success could point the way to your next step.
The Choice Is Yours
Here’s the most interesting thing about what we just covered.

Both groups of people: The Small Minds and The Great Minds, are observing the exact same situations. But what they see is entirely different. You aren’t locked into either way of thinking. The difference is what you focus on… and that is a choice you make each time.
Put Better Choices To Work For You
Learn from a mistake. Look to gain understanding in a difficult situation. Replace gossip with an honest conversation. Let someone else’s success inspire you and perhaps give you an idea worth trying.
You develop your greater mind one response… one choice… at a time.
